In the early morning hours of Friday, May 13th a 34-year-old rickshaw driver, Travis ODell, had been pedaling in the roadway when the vehicle hit him from behind at Meeting and George Streets in Downtown Charleston. Travis sustained serious injuries, including a fractured chin and pelvis, dislocated left hip and broken right forearm, crushed legs, as well as severe cuts. He remains in serious but stable condition as of Monday, May 16, 2022.

Officers arrested driver, Andrew Melton Demetre, on one count of hit-and-run resulting in death or injury and one count of felony DUI resulting in great bodily injury or death, records show. When police approached him, Demetre uttered, “Is the rickshaw driver OK?” according to reports.
